DULUTH, Minn. - The Martin Luther College men's soccer team saw its season come to a close in a 1-0 defeat at St. Scholastica in the semifinal round of the UMAC Postseason Tournament on Wednesday.
The Knights battled the top-seeded Saints tough the entire game, but conceded the game's only goal to Armin Bobaric in the 74th minute.
MLC keeper
Caleb King was stellar throughout the match, stopping 15 of the Saints' 16 shots on goal, and making several diving saves to give the Knights a chance for the upset.
Joseph Graumann gave CSS trouble in the first meeting between the two teams back on October 22, and did the same on Wednesday, leading the Knights with three total shots and two shots on target. His best chance came early in the second half, when he attempted a shot from just outside the box that CSS keeper Sandy Davidson-Hunt made a diving save to keep from the back of the Saints' net.Â
The Saints were credited with 44 total shots, but the MLC defense of
Ryan Plath,
Aaron Swanson,
Justin Digman and
Elijah Kroll did a strong job of keeping many of those attempts on the outside and away from King.
MLC finished the season 10-9-1 overall in defeat, while CSS improved to 12-7, and advanced to the finals of the UMAC Tournament with the win.
The Knights' ten wins this season were more than any MLC men's soccer team since the 2003 season (14), while this year's trip to the UMAC Tournament was the first for the program since the 2006 season.Â
