NEW ULM, Minn. - The Martin Luther College baseball team lost both games of a doubleheader against St. Scholastica on Saturday by the scores of 15-0 and 21-11.
GAME 1
CSS took a big lead early on the way to a 15-0 win in game one.
The Saints built an 11-0 lead after three innings thanks to a pair of home runs (including a second-inning grand slam) from Sam Christofferson.Â
Jason Lindemann and
Jonathan Kock each had a hit in the first inning, but the Knights were held without a hit the rest of the way.
Dillon Solomon got the start and fell to 0-6 on the season after allowing nine runs on eight hits in 2.0 innings.Â
GAME 2
The Knights held a lead heading into the ninth inning, but the Saints exploded for 11 runs in the final frame to finish the sweep with a 21-11 win.
MLC fell scored three runs in the first inning thanks to a three-run home run by
Jonathan Kock, but the Saints built a 7-3 advantage heading into the bottom of the fourth.
The Knights roared back in their time at bat in the fourth, sending 12 batters to the plate and scoring eight runs to take an 11-7 lead. MLC took advantage of a pair of CSS errors, and
John Marquardt delivered the big blow in a form of a three-run double to left centerfield to finish the scoring. Solomon and
Jared Lindemann also had an RBI in the inning.
Travis Kretsch entered the game in the fourth in relief of Marquardt, who started the game and went the first 3.1 innings. Kretsch pitched 3.2 innings, allowing three runs on four hits before leaving with the Knights ahead 11-10 after the seventh.
James Hemmelman pitched a scoreless eighth, but the Saints took the lead on a Brian Minks home run with one out in the inning, and then added nine more runs with the help of four MLC errors against Hemmelman and pair of MLC relievers.Â
Kock led the Knights with two hits and three runs batted in. Hemmelman and Kock scored two runs for MLC.
The Knights fell to 4-20 on the season and 2-8 in UMAC play with the two defeats. CSS improved its record to 19-7 overall and 10-0 in league play with the sweep.
MLC will return to action tomorrow (Sunday, April 24) when they host Crown in a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch was moved up to 12 p.m. to try to avoid storms in the forecast.Â
