NEW ULM, Minn. - The Martin Luther College softball team closed its season with a doubleheader split against St. Olaf on Monday. The Olies took game one 2-1, but MLC finished strong with a 5-1 win in game two.
GAME 1
MLC lost a pitcher's duel in game one by the score of 2-1.
Kathryn Marquardt was strong on the mound for MLC, allowing only two runs (one earned) on five hits in seven innings, but the Knights were able to generate only one run on a
Lillian Herber RBI-single in the fourth inning that scored
Audrey Timm.
Herber's single tied the game, but the Olies took the lead right back with one run in the fifth inning, with the help of the only MLC error in the game that gave St. Olaf an extra out.
Marquardt took the loss, falling to 4-10 on the season.
Herber and
Janelle Radue each finished with two hits to lead MLC.
GAME 2
The Knights returned the favor in game two, holding St. Olaf to only three hits on the way to a 5-1 win to secure a split.
Kelli Doell led the way on the mound for MLC, pitching the first 6.2 innings and allowing only the one run on three hits before giving way to Marquardt for the final out in her final game for MLC. Doell earned the win and improved her record to 2-4 this season.
Olivia Knudsen put MLC on the board in the second inning thanks to a sacrifice fly, and the Knights followed that up with a pair of runs off wild pitches in the second and fourth innings, respectively. After building the lead to 4-1 after four innings, Doell finished the scoring with an RBI double that scored
Kayla Rosenbaum to give the Knights the four-run cushion.
MLC finished the game with seven hits from seven different players. Timm led the team with two runs scored.
MLC closed its season with a record of 9-20 after the split. St. Olaf moved its record to 14-17.
