NEW ULM, Minn. - The Martin Luther College baseball team earned its first two wins of the UMAC season with a doubleheader sweep of Northland College by the scores of 7-5 and 10-9 on Friday.
MLC 7, NC 5
MLC took advantage of a number of Northland mistakes to win game one 7-5.
The Knights took control early with a four-run second inning thanks to four Lumberjacks' walks and one error.
MLC would add three more runs in the fifth frame thanks to RBI singles by
Caleb Christopher,
Jared Lindemann and
Nate Goelzer.
That would be enough for
Dillon Solomon (1-4), who worked the first six innings and dodged trouble as he allowed three runs (two earned) in six innings. He allowed five hits and worked around seven walks with the help of four strikeouts.Â
Noah Panzer earned his first career save in relief, as he pitched the final three innings and allowed two runs on three hits.
MLC 10, NC 9
The Knights finished the sweep with a walk-off game two win by the score of 10-9.
MLC built an 8-2 lead through six innings, but the Lumberjacks grabbed control with a seven-run seventh innings to take a 9-8 lead. The Knights tied the game 9-9 in the eighth inning, and then won it in the ninth thanks to a
Tyler Roecker single through the infield that scored
Karl Kuschel from third base.
The Knights built the big early lead with the help of a two-run
Dillon Solomon home run in the first inning. The Knights added on run in the third inning, and then scored five more in the sixth to take a six-run lead.
Adam Kock received a no decision after allowing eight runs on nine hits in 6.1 innings. He was charged with six of the seven Northland runs in the seventh. Goelzer (1-0) relieved him and earned his first win of the season after allowing one run in the final 2.2 innings.Â
MLC improved its record to 6-20 overall and 2-10 in UMACÂ play with the two wins. Northland fell to 10-18 on the season and 5-5 in UMAC play following the two defeats.
The Knights will return to action on Monday, May 1, when they travel to Crown College for a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
