NEW ULM, Minn. - The Martin Luther College softball team's season came to a close on Sunday with a doubleheader split against Minnesota Morris. The Cougars won game one in 10 innings, but MLC won game two 15-5 in five innings.
The game one loss eliminated MLC from contention for the UMAC Postseason Tournament. The Knights needed to sweep the Cougars to keep those hopes alive.
UMM 8, MLC 5 (10 innings)
The Cougars scored three runs in the 10th inning to take game one 8-5.
The Knights trailed 5-3 after four innings, but tied the game at 5-5 with one run in both the fifth and sixth frames.Â
The score remained tied until the 10th inning, when the Cougars batted around on the way to three runs off MLC reliever
Rebecca Pruss (6-9). Pruss took the loss after allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits in six innings.
MLC had its chances at the plate, but left 16 runners on base in the game.
Madison Ott led the team with three hits in the game.
MLC 15, UMM 5 (5 innings)
The Knights took advantage of the chances they missed in game one in a 15-5 game-two win to secure the split.
MLC fell behind 2-0 in the top of the second inning, but scored twice in the bottom half of the second, and then 13 runs combined in the third and fourth innings to build a big lead.
Audrey Timm led the way offensively with three hits and three runs batted in.
Samantha Schoch drove in five runners on her two hits, while
Erika Rosenbaum added three hits and two runs scored.Â
Morgan Palubicki (5-8) recorded the win after allowing three runs on seven hits in four innings.Â
MLC finished the season 11-17 overall and 8-8 in UMAC play following the split. UMM moved to 11-27 on the season and 5-11 in conference.
The Knights were scheduled to play a home doubleheader on Monday (April 30) against UW-River Falls, but those games were canceled by UW-River Falls due to other schedule conflicts.Â
