CAPE CORAL, Fla. - The Martin Luther College softball team swept the final day of its spring Florida trip with a pair of wins over Curry (10-2) and Anna Maria (16-7) on Monday.
MLC 10, Curry 2 (5 innings)
The Knights smashed 11 hits and a pair of home runs in a 10-2 win in five innings over Curry on Monday morning.
Curry took an early 1-0 lead, but MLC came back with one run in the bottom of the first inning, and then took control of the game with a five-run second frame capped by a three-run home run by
Kylie Wolf.
Brittany Denn also had a big hit in the inning with a two-run double with the bases loaded before scoring on Wolf's second home run of the season.
After MLC starting pitcher
Rebecca Pruss (2-3) held Curry scoreless in the top of the third inning, the Knights tacked on another four runs in the bottom half of the inning.
Elena Hoffman's three-run home run capped the scoring, while
Brett Burger scored earlier in the inning following an error.Â
That would be more than enough offense for Pruss, who earned the win after allowing two runs (one earned) on seven hits while striking out one.
MLC 16, Anna Maria 7
MLC finished its four day trip with a season-high 16 runs in a 16-7 win over Anna Maria.
The Knights built a 5-3 lead after four innings, and then put the game away with a six-run fifth frame with the help of another three-run homer by Hoffman. The blast was Hoffman's sixth of the season and put the sophomore just one shy of the school record with 14 career home runs.
Anna Maria kept the game alive with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, but the Knights added six more runs in the seventh inning, capped by a three-run home run by
Samantha Schoch.
MLC finished with 16 hits on the day, led by a 4-4 effort from Denn. Denn hit three doubles and drove in three runs while also scoring three runs. Becca Doering, Hoffman and Wolf each recorded two hits and scored two runs.Â
Morgan Palubicki (2-3) earned the win after allowing five runs in 5.0 innings.
MLC improved to 4-6 on the season following the sweep, and will return to action on Saturday, March 28, when it hosts Northwestern-St. Paul in the UMAC opener. That doubleheader is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
