Softball Streak Hits Eight Following Sweep of Rams

NEW ULM, Minn. - The Martin Luther College softball team pushed its winning streak to eight following a doubleheader sweep of North Central University (NCU) by the scores of 21-3 and 19-1 on Wednesday.

MLC 21, NCU 3 (5 innings)

MLC recorded 20 hits in only four times at bat on the way to a 21-3 win in game one.

MLC jumped out front with a five-run first-inning, and then added one run in the second, nine more in the third, and finished with a six-run fourth frame.

All nine players in the starting line-up recorded at least one hit and one run scored in the game. Jordyn Heckendorf went 3-3 at the plate with four runs scored, while Halley Engelbrecht drove in a team-best four runs thanks to a single and a triple. Heckendorf, Engelbrecht, Lisa Hoffer, Kylie Wolf, Samantha Schoch, Elena Hoffman and Emma Berg each had at least two hits.

Brett Burger (7-5) recorded another win (her sixth in the team's last seven games) in the circle after allowing only three runs (two earned) on four hits in 5.0 innings.

MLC 19, NCU 1 (5 innings)

The Knights finished the sweep with a 19-1 win in game two.

MLC led 2-1 after the first inning, and then put the game away by sending 18 batters to the plate and scoring 13 runs in the second inning. The Knights recorded 10 hits in the inning, including three triples (by Schoch, Hoffman and Hoffer).

Hoffer finished the game 3-4 at the plate with a career-best six runs batted in. Schoch also had three hits (two triples and one double) to go with four RBI, while Heckendorf, Engelbrecht and Hoffer each scored three runs.

Megan Pung (2-4) started the game on the rubber and pitched the first three innings, allowing only one run on one hit to record the win. Hoffman pitched two scoreless innings in relief.

MLC improved to 9-9 on the season and 7-3 in UMAC play with the sweep. NCU fell to 3-17 overall and 0-12 in league play following the two losses.

The Knights will return to action on Saturday, April 24, when they travel to St. Scholastica for a doubleheader scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
