Knights Lose Two at Carleton in Regular Season Finale

NORTHFIELD, Minn. - The Martin Luther College softball team closed its regular season with a pair of losses at Carleton College by the scores of 11-6 and 16-5 on Thursday.

Carleton 11, MLC 6

MLC led most of game one, but Carleton scored six times in the sixth inning to come back to win 11-6.

The Knights got off a smashing start as Lisa Hoffer and Elena Hoffman each hit two-run home runs in the top of the first inning.

MLC led 5-2 after four thanks to a Hoffer double in the fourth inning, and then 6-5 going into the bottom of the sixth after a Jordyn Heckendorf RBI-single.

Things went south from there, however, as Carleton rallied with two outs to score six runs with the help of two MLC errors to give them the lead and the win.

Brett Burger (8-9) took the loss after allowing 11 runs (five earned) in 6.0 innings.

Heckendorf led MLC with three hits and two runs scored. Hoffer added two hits and three runs batted in.

Carleton 16, MLC 5 (5 inn.)

Two big innings were enough for Carleton to take game two 16-5 in five innings.

Carleton scored six times in the first inning, once in the second, and then nine more runs in the third to take a commanding lead.

Lexi Fischer drove in two runs with a double in the second inning, while Hoffer, Samantha Schoch and Hoffman each drove in one run apiece in the fifth inning for the Knights.

Hoffman (0-1) started the game on the mound and took the loss, pitching one inning and allowing six runs (two earned) on two hits and three walks.

Hoffer once again led the Knights at the plate with two hits.

MLC dropped to 10-16 on the season after the two losses. Carleton improved to 9-13 with the two wins.

MLC's regular season is over, but its hopes for a postseason berth in the UMAC Tournament remains. The Knights are currently tied with Northland College with UMAC wins. The Knights' chances of making the conference tournament next week hinge on Northland's doubleheader at Northwestern-St. Paul on Friday (May 7). If Northland wins one or both games, the Knights' season will be over and they will finish in sixth place. If Northwestern-St. Paul wins both games, MLC will make the conference tournament as the fifth seed.
