Topeka, KS - The Martin Luther College baseball team had a successful trip to the Sunflower State to start the season as the Knights won their opening series by taking game three on Saturday afternoon over Hamline
5-0.
Aidan Berg tossed a complete game shutout in his first collegiate start to power the Knights past the Pipers.
Berg went the distance and only gave up two hits in nine innings of work on the mound. The freshman forced the Hamline lineup into 16 groundouts and threw three strikeouts while keeping their hitters guessing. The Pipers never truly threatened to score or put much pressure on Berg as he mowed down their lineup.
Mark Vogel got the Knights on the scoreboard with an RBI single in the second inning. MLC added two more runs to make it 3-0 in the third as they manufactured their runs from aÂ
Carlos Walta RBI single and an RBI groundout from
Jackson Anderson.
From there, the Knights seized control and tacked on insurance runs in the fifth and seventh frames to secure the 5-0 win. MLC finished with nine hits as a team and Walta hit his second big fly of the season on a solo home run in the seventh. Walta and Anderson led the squad with two RBI apiece.
MLC improved their record to 2-1 and will look for the same results in a couple of weeks when they head down to their annual spring break trip in Auburndale, Florida. The Knights' first game is a doubleheader versus Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts on Friday, March 14, starting at 1 p.m. Eastern time.
