Roseville, MN - The Martin Luther College baseball team took on Northwestern (MN) this weekend for a three-game series that was originally scheduled to be the home opener for the Knights. However, the series was moved to Northwestern due to field conditions earlier in the week. MLC played hard, but the Eagles swept the Knights
6-4, 8-1, and 5-1.
Game 1 Northwestern 6, MLC 4
On Friday, Northwestern opened up game 1 with two runs in the top of the second and third innings to take a 4-0 lead. The Eagles added one run in the seventh to make it 5-0, but the Knights fought back and scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth. The big inning included a pair of RBI doubles from
Carlos Walta and
Alex Ritter. Despite the late push, Northwestern recorded the final three outs and took the 6-4 win.
Parker Winghart, Carter Seltz, Walta, and Ritter each finished with an RBI, while the Knights outhit Northwestern 9-8.
Game 2 Northwestern 8, MLC 1
Game 2 saw the Eagles respond with a 15-5 advantage in base hits, and they ultimately won the contest due to plating six runs in the top of the third. In that inning, the Eagles had six hits with four of them being doubles. MLC's only run came in the bottom of the third frame when Walta hit an RBI single to left field, driving in
Mark Vogel.
Game 3 Northwestern 5, MLC 1
The standalone game and final contest of the series featured a solid outing from
Aidan Berg, who struck out seven in five innings of work on the mound, but the Eagles scored four runs off the freshman to give them the edge.
Four of the five runs came in the middle of the action, while MLC put up their only run in the bottom of the fourth. Walta had the RBI single, bringing in Winghart.
MLC (5-15) now looks to host their first home series of the season on Tuesday, April 8, when Maranatha Baptist comes to town. The doubleheader is planned to begin at 12 p.m.
