Storm Lake, IA - The MLC softball team played its first series since its South Carolina trip. MLC traveled to Buena Vista for a doubleheader originally scheduled in New Ulm. However, the weather played a factor in moving these games over to Iowa, and the Beavers defeated the Knights
6-1 in game one and
2-1 in game two.
Game 1 Buena Vista 6, MLC 1
In the first contest of the day, MLC found success at the plate, recording a total of 10 hits. However, the Knights left 10 runners on base and were unable to get their base runners home except in the second inning when
Sarah Yonkovich hit an RBI double to score
Kieghtan Rank.
Buena Vista held a 5-1 lead through five innings and tacked on an additional run in the sixth inning off of a solo home run.
Chloe Berg, Kaylee Pickering, and Yonkovich all recorded two base hits to lead the Knights' squad.
Game 2 Buena Vista 2, MLC 1
In the second match-up of the day, MLC received its best outing from its starting pitcher in
Kieghtan Rank. In 6.1 innings of work on the mound, Rank allowed 2 runs (1 earned) on seven hits and struck out three batters.
The game would go into extra innings into the eighth as the score was tied 1-1 through seven frames. MLC tied it up in the top of the seventh when
Kiara Humann drove in Rank from third base.
However, with the base runner being placed automatically at second base in extra innings, Buena Vista was able to capitalize with the next score when an RBI double brought in the winning run in the bottom of the eighth.
Humann and
Chloe Koschnitzke each finished with two base hits to lead the Knights in the second game.
MLC will now begin conference play on Wednesday, May 25 to play the first of a three-game series at Crown College. First pitch will be at 4 p.m., with the other two games occurring on Saturday afternoon.
