MLC falls to Minnesota Morris in 3-game series

Morris, MN - The MLC baseball team finished its three-game series with Minnesota Morris on Tuesday after postponing game three almost a week later due to the weather. The Cougars claimed the first two contests last Thursday, April 16, by a final score of 11-3 (Game 1) and 16-12 (Game 2). Tuesday's game resulted in a Morris sweep of the Knights after they took it 4-1.

Game 1 Morris 11, MLC 3

MLC began the first game with an early 1-0 lead after Parker Winghart drove in a run on a single. Minnesota Morris responded and scored three in the second and third innings, which included a solo home run.

The Cougars used the long ball again to get them an 8-2 lead through five innings. MLC's two other runs came off of RBI groundouts by Winghart and Michel Krebs.

Micah Herbst paced MLC in hits and runs (2), while Winghart led in RBI (2). Despite the loss, MLC pitchers Aidan Berg (6) and Silas Winkel (4) combined for 10 K's.

Game 2 Morris 16, MLC 12

MLC showed a lot of perseverance in game two and climbed out of an early 4-0 deficit by scoring seven unanswered runs through four innings. MLC made it 10-4 after the top of the eighth.

However, the Knights were unable to hold on to their lead, surrendering six runs, which included a grand slam by the Cougars in the ninth to tie it up 12-12. After a lightning delay that delayed the extra innings for over half an hour, Minnesota Morris finished the comeback with another grand slam to take the 16-12 win.

Berg finished with a career high (6) RBI, including a grand slam in favor of the Knights that he hit in the third inning. Winghart also went yard, hitting a homer in the top of the ninth. The shortstop finished with three RBI and two runs. Jackson Anderson, Krebs, and Berg also scored twice.

Game 3 Morris 4, MLC 1

The third game of the series was postponed almost a week later and was played on Tuesday evening. The game featured a pitcher's duel, unlike the first two contests.

After the Cougars took an early 1-0 lead in the first frame, both teams were scoreless until the sixth, when MLC tied it up with a sacrifice fly from John Westendorf.

Minnesota Morris answered with a solo shot in the bottom half of the sixth and put up two insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh to hold off the Knights.

Despite the loss, Carlos Walta pitched well, going six innings on the mound, allowing only two runs.

MLC will have another UMAC series on the road when they go to Northwestern, starting on Friday, April 24, at 3 p.m.
