Greg Holzhueter

Greg Holzhueter completed his 10th season as Head Men’s Basketball Coach at Martin Luther College following the 2025-26 campaign.

Since taking over, Holzhueter has emphasized long-term program stability and competitive growth. That emphasis has translated into measurable progress on the court, highlighted by two distinct three-year stretches of notable improvement. After inheriting a program coming off a 1-24 season, the Knights steadily improved over the next three years, finishing 2-23, 4-21, and 7-18 in the next 3 seasons. Following the graduation of a significant senior class after the 2021-2022 season and a 2-23 record in 2022-23, the program again showed sustained growth with records of 5-20, 8-17, and 11-14 over the next three seasons.

The Knights’ 11 wins in the 2025-2026 season were the program’s highest total since the 2008-09 season, a span of 17 years. The team also recorded five UMAC conference victories, the most for the program in the past decade. In UMAC play, the Knights swept rival Bethany Lutheran College for the first time in 21 years.

During Holzhueter’s tenure, MLC players have earned All-UMAC recognition 9 times, including one 2nd Team, one Rookie of the Year, one All-Defense, and six Honorable Mention selections. Holzhueter has coached three 1,000-point scorers, including a memorable stretch during the 2025-26 season in which two players reached the milestone in back-to-back games.

Holzhueter returned to MLC after serving as head coach at Bethany Lutheran College for three seasons, where he led the Vikings to a 20-24 record in UMAC play. Prior to that role, he spent two seasons as the program’s lead assistant.

A 2011 graduate of Martin Luther College, Holzhueter was a four-year starter in football, basketball, and baseball, earning All-UMAC honors in all three sports.

On the basketball court, he finished his career with records for career assists (370) and steals (170), ranked second in free throws made (319), and finished seventh on the all-time scoring list with 1,191 points. He was a three-time First Team All-UMAC selection.

In football, Holzhueter finished his career ranked first in program history in touchdown passes (46) and completion percentage (56.4), while also placing among the top five in multiple passing and rushing categories. On the baseball diamond, he set the program record for career hits with 147.

In addition to his coaching responsibilities, Holzhueter serves as Director of the Academic Success Center at Martin Luther College.
