NEW ULM, Minn. - The Martin Luther College women's soccer team snapped a streak of tough-luck losses with a 3-1 win over UW-Superior on Saturday.
The Knights fell behind early on a goal by Britt Zieroth of UWS, but
Jenna Maurer took control for the Knigths with goals in the 38th and 42nd minutes to give MLC the 2-1 lead at halftime.
Maurer's first goal came off a pass from
Emily Muir. Her second score came after dribbling through several defenders and then beating the keeper from point blank range.
The Knights played a strong defensive second half, holding the Yellowjackets to only four shots on goal. On offense,
Hailey Johnson was able to score a needed insurance goal off assists from
Martha Balge and
Danielle Hall to put MLC up by the final 3-1 margin.
Maurer's two goals gave her a team-high 11 this season, and also moved her into a tie for fourth place in program history with 36 career goals.
Julia Barthels was strong in net for the Knights, stopping five of the six shots she faced on goal.
MLC improved to 3-11-1 on the season with a 2-6-1 in UMAC play with the win. UWS fell to 2-10 overall and 2-6 in conference play with the loss.
The Knights will return to action on Wednesday, October 21, when they travel to Saint Mary's for a game scheduled to start at 5 p.m.
