NEW ULM, Minn. - The Martin Luther College women's basketball team lost 60-56 to the College of Saint Benedict Monday night.
The Blazers held a 31-21 halftime lead, but the Knights were able to flip the momentum with an aggressive, trapping press that forced a number of CSB turnovers. Trailing by four in the final seconds of the third quarter, senior point guard
Erin Schmeling made a deep three-pointer at the buzzer to cut the deficit to only one point at 39-38 going into the fourth quarter.
The Knights continued to frustrate the Blazers with the press in the fourth quarter, but weren't able to take advantage of offensive opportunities to take control of the game. CSB built its lead back up to nine poins at 55-46 midway through the quarter, and the Knights were never able to cut the deficit closer than three points the rest of the way.
Schmeling led MLC with 14 points, and also dished out a game-high seven assists against only three turnovers.
Mariah Schoof added 12 points to go with team highs in rebounds (ten) and blocks (four).
Grace Schultz added nine points, while
Leah Nass finshed with four steals and seven rebounds to go with her six points.
MLC fell to 1-3 on the season in defeat, while CSB improved its record to 3-1 with the win.
The Knights will be off for more than a week for Thanksgiving break, and will return to game action on Friday, December 4, when they host St. Scholastica in the UMAC opener.
