NEW ULM, Minn. - The Martin Luther College men's basketball team overcame a 20-point first half deficit to force a pair of overtimes, but lost 117-113 to Crown on Friday.
The Knights fell behind 44-24 at the half, but scored 66 points in the second half to force an extra period at 90-90.
MLC trailed by three points in the final seconds, but the Storm fouled
J.D. Uhlhorn as he was attempting a game-tying three-pointer as time expired. With zeroes on the clock, Uhlhorn calmly made all three free throws to force overtime.
Trailing once again in the first overtime, the Knights received last second heroics to extend the game, this time on a lay-up by
Michael Paulsen as time expired to send the game into a second overtime at 101-101.
In the second extra period, the Knights overcame a five-point deficit to come back and take the lead, but a lay-up by the Storm's Seth Moan with 22 seconds to play would be the game-winner.Â
Todd Brassow kept the Knights in the game for much of regulation scoring 43 of his MLC single-game record 45 points in regulation to lead the way. He also grabbed a team-high ten rebounds in the game.
T.J. Babinec started slow, but made a key three-pointer at the buzzer to end the first half, and then scored 18 points of his 22 points in the second half and overtime periods.Â
Uhlhorn came through beyond the three huge free throws to force overtime. He scored a career-high 21 points off the bench, 19 of which came after halftime.Â
Paulsen finished with 18 points and five assists.
MLC fell to 1-13 overall and 1-6 in UMAC play in defeat. Crown improved its record to 2-12 on the season and 1-6 in league play following the win.
The Knights will return to action tomorrow (Saturday, January 16), when they host Minnesota Morris. That game is scheduled to tip off at 3 p.m.
