NEW ULM, Minn. - The Martin Luther College women's basketball team used its depth to run away from Crown in a 77-50 win Friday night.
All available players played and scored in the game for MLC, which lived at the free throw line for much of the game.
The Knights remained aggressive for all four quarters, leading to a season high 46 free throw attempts. MLC finished 31-46 from the charity stripe, with
Erin Schmeling leading the team with ten attempts (and seven made free throws).
The Knghts jumped to a five-point lead in the first quarter, and began to pull away in the second quarter on the way to a 38-21 halftime lead.
MLC would continue to control the game in the second half, building the lead to 21 points after three quarters as they cruised to the win.
Jessica Friebe led the Knights with 11 points, making four of her five attempts from the field in the process. Mariah Shoof joined her in double figures with ten points.
Grace Schultz scored nine points and led the team with eight rebounds.
The Knights not only outscored the Storm 31-19 at the free throw line, but also won the battle down low, outrebounding Crown 63-37, and also outscoring the Storm 32-10 in the paint.
MLC improved to 7-7 on the season and 4-3 in UMAC play with the win. Crown fell to 2-13 overall and 0-7 in conference following the defeat.
The Knights will return to action tomorrow (Saturday, January 16), when they host Minnesota Morris. That game is scheduled to tip off at 5 p.m.
