ST. BONIFACIUS, Minn. - The Martin Luther College women's basketball team survived a 20-point comeback from Crown in a 68-58 overtime win Saturday.
With the win, MLC advanced to the UMAC Postseason Tournament, where it will play in the 4/5 match-up at Minnesota Morris on Monday, February 22.
The Knights were in full control of the game midway through the third quarter, when a
Mariah Schoof three-point field goal pushed their lead to 42-22 with 5:32 to play in the quarter.
MLC would go cold from that point, going without a field goal the rest of the quarter as the Storm cut the deficit to 45-32 entering the final stanza.
In the fourth quarter, the Knights scored a pair of field goals early to build a 49-36 lead with 6:27 to play, but went without a field goal the rest of regulation as the Storm went on a 14-0 run to take a brief 50-49 lead before Schoof tied the game 50-50 with a free throw in the final minute to send the game into overtime.
In overtime, the Knights found their offensive rhythm once again, going 4-5 from the field and finishing the game on a 13-3 run to secure the win.Â
The Knights finished the game shooting 35.4 percent from the field, and outscored the Storm 18-9 at the free throw line thanks to 75 percent shooting from the charity stripe.
Grace Schultz was the leading scorer for MLC with 18 points on 7-12 shooting, and also grabbed seven rebounds to go with six steals. Schoof added 17 points and made all four of MLC's three-point field goals, while
Jade St. Germaine added 11 points and a team-best eight rebounds off the bench.Â
MLC finished the regular season 12-13 overall and 7-9 in UMAC play with the win, and earned a spot in the conference tournament with the win, combined with a 60-54 loss by St. Scholastica against Northwestern on Saturday. Crown fell to 4-21 on the season and 1-15 in league play with the loss.
The Knights' UMAC Tournament game at UMM is scheduled to tip off at 7:30 p.m. Monday night.Â
