Softball Rolls to DH Sweep at NCU

MINNEAPOLIS - The Martin Luther College softball team earned its first two wins of the UMAC season with a doubleheader sweep at North Central on Wednesday by the scores of 11-2 and 30-1.

GAME 1

The Knights opened the day with an 11-2 win in five innings at NCU.

MLC exploded for eight runs in the top of the first inning, taking advantage of three NCU erros as they sent 12 batters to the plate. Jessica Friebe scored a pair of runs, and also recorded a two-run double in her second at bat. Megan Lemke, Olivia Knudson and Rachel Haugly also had run-scoring base hits in the inning.

That would be more than enough support for MLC starting pitcher Kathryn Marquardt, who improved her record to 2-5 on the season after allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits in 5.0 innings.

Lemke and Knudson each recorded a pair of hits to lead the Knights.

GAME 2

MLC scored a season-high in runs in a 30-1 game two win to complete the sweep.

The Knights were held scoreless in the first inning, but scored seven runs in both the second and third innings, added nine more in the fourth, and finished the game with an 11-run fifth frame.

MLC outhit the Rams 23-4 in the game, and 10 of the 12 players who received at least one plate appearance recorded at least one hit (the other two scored at least one run).

Lemke led the MLC hitters with a career game, finishing 5-6 with seven runs batted in and four runs scored. One of those five hits was a home run, her second of the season.

Friebe (five runs scored), Kayla Rosenbaum (five RBI, four runs scored), Kelli Doell (four runs scored, three hits), Marquardt (three RBI, three runs scored) and Audrey Timm (three hits) also had big games at the plate.

Amanda Shoch improved her record to 2-3 on the season on the mound for MLC, allowing one run on four hits in four innings.

MLC improved its record to 5-10 overall and 2-2 in UMAC play with the sweep. NCU fell to 0-14 on the season and 0-6 in league play following the two defeats.

The Knights will return to action on Friday, April 15, when they host Bethany Lutheran in a doubleheader. First pitch of the opener is scheduled for 3 p.m.
