Knights Battle, but Lose Two against GAC

NEW ULM, Minn. - The Martin Luther College baseball team battled against Gustavus Adolphus College on Monday, but lost both games of a doubleheader by the scores of 5-2 and 9-1.

GAME 1

The Knights were unable to come up with the timely hit in a 5-2 loss in game one.

MLC outhit the Gusties 10-8, but grounded into three double plays to get GAC pitchers out of jams.

Dillon Solomon went the distance on the mound for MLC, allowing five runs (four earned) and striking out seven. He fell to 0-5 on the season in defeat.

MLC cut its deficit to 3-1 in the sixth inning on a James Hemmelman RBI-single. After the Gusties scored a pair of insurance runs in the seventh, Solomon scored the Knights' second run on a wild pitch after he tripled to reach base.

Solomon, Hemmelman and Jason Lindemann each finished with two hits for MLC.

GAME 2

MLC was nearly no-hit in game two as the Gusties finished the sweep with a 9-1 win.

The Knights were held hitless through six innings, but Lindemann hit a double down the right field line in the seventh (and final) inning, and then scored on a Hemmelman single two batters later to give MLC its only run.

The Gusties scored one in the second, and then took control of the game with a four-run third inning off MLC starting pitcher John Marquardt. GAC would add two more runs in both the fifth and seventh innings.

Marquardt fell to 0-2 on the season in defeat, allowing five runs (three earned) on five hits and three walks in three innings.

MLC fell to 2-18 on the season with the two defeats. GAC improved its record to 11-13 with the sweep.

The Knights will return to action on Wednesday, April 20, when they travel to North Central. Game one of that doubleheader is scheduled to start at 1:30 p.m.
