NEW ULM, Minn. - The Martin Luther College softball team lost both games of a doubleheader against Minnesota Morris on Tuesday by the scores of 11-1 and 13-5.
GAME 1
The Knights allowed five runs in the first inning and weren't able to come back in an 11-1 loss in game one.
The Cougars jumped on MLC starting pitcher
Kathryn Marquardt for five runs in the first inning, and knocked her out of the game with three more runs in the third to take an 8-1 lead.
The Knights were held to four hits, and scored their lone run in the second inning thanks to a wild pitch that allowed Oliva Knudsen to cross the plate from third base.
Marquardt fell to 3-7 on the season with the loss after allowing eight runs on ten hits and 3.0 innings.
GAME 2
The Cougars were able to complete the sweep with a 13-5 win over the Knights in game two.
MLC scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning on RBI base hits from
Kelli Doell and Aubrey Timm to take a 2-1 lead, but the Cougars scored at least once in all five innings, and started to put the game out of reach with six runs in the fourth frame.
Janelle Radue and
Jessica Friebe each drove in runs in the fourth inning, and Knudsen scored
Megan Lemke on a single in the fifth inning, but it wasn't enough to keep the Cougars from ending the game thanks to the eight-run rule after five.
Doell started the game and pitched the first four innings, allowing 11 runs (four earned) on 11 hits. She fell to 1-4 on the season with the loss.
The Knights fell to 6-15 on the season and 3-7 in UMAC play with the two losses. UMM improved its record to 6-22 overall, and 4-4 in league play, with the two wins.
MLC will return to action on Friday, April 22, when it travels to Northland for a doubleheader scheduled to start at 3 p.m.
