WATERTOWN, Wis. - The Martin Luther College baseball team followed Friday's doubleheader split at Maranatha Baptist with another split on Saturday against the Sabercats. The Knights won game one 3-2 in extra innings, but lost game two 3-2.
GAME 1
MLC starting pitcher
Jonathan Kock led the Knights to a 3-2 win in eight innings in game one.
Kock allowed both runs in the first inning after a walk and two hits, but dominated the rest of the way. Kock didn't allow a hit in his final seven innings, and retired 23 of the final 24 batters he faced after a one-out triple in the first inning. He improved his record to 4-6 this season with the complete game win.
Karl Kuschel doubled to score the first MLC run in the third inning, and the Knights tied the game 2-2 in the fifth thanks to an MBU error.
In the eighth inning, Kuschel scored the go-ahead run thanks to an RBI single by
Travis Kretsch.
Kretsch finished the game with a team-best three hits.
Jason Lindemann and Kuschel added two hits, while
Caleb Kuether scored the team's first two runs.Â
GAME 2
The Sabercats were able to even the weekend series with a 3-2 walk-off win in game two Saturday.
MLC took early 1-0 and 2-1 leads, but MBU tied the game 2-2 in the fourth, and then came through with a two-out walk-off single to right field off MLC starting pitcher
James Hemmelman to finish the game.
Hemmelman threw a complete game for the Knights, allowing three runs on nine hits while striking out four in 6.2 innings. He fell to 1-6 this season in defeat.
The Knights were held to only four hits in the game.
Dillon Solomon recorded two of the, while Kock and
Nate Goelzer each added one hit. Kuschel recorded the only RBI in the game for MLC.
The Knights moved to 7-23 on the season following the split, while MBU is now 9-20.
MLC will return to action on Wednesday, May 4, when it travels to Crown for a doubleheader.Â
