NEW ULM, Minn. - The Martin Luther College baseball team's season came to an end with a pair of losses Saturday against Northwestern. The Knights lost game one of the doubleheader 6-3, and then dropped game two 5-0.
GAME 1
The Eagles shut down the MLC bats in the later innings to win game one 6-3.
MLC took advantage of three UNW errors in the first inning to take an early 1-0 lead, and then tied the game 3-3 in the third with the help of an RBI double from
Jonathan Kock.
UNW would shut the door from there, scoring once in the fourth, fifth and ninth innings, while the Eagles' pitchers held MLC without a hit in the final four innings.Â
James Hemmelman pitched a complete game for MLC and took the loss, falling to 1-7 on the season after allowing six runs (five earned) on 13 hits in 9.0 innings.Â
Tom Keller led all MLC hitters with two hits. Kock scored two of the Knights' three runs.
GAME 2
Northwestern was able to break open a scoreless game with five runs in the eighth inning to win game two 5-0.
John Marquardt was stellar for MLC on the mound, shutting out the Eagles through seven innings.
With the score still 0-0 in the top of the eighth, the Eagles put together five hits, and also took advantage of two MLC errors, to score five times off Marquardt and MLC reliever
Dillon Solomon.
Marquardt pitched the first 7.2 innings, allowing five runs (one earned) on eight hits and two walks. He fell to 0-4 on the season with the loss.
MLC was held to five hits for the game. Hemmelman recorded two hits, while Kock,
Jared Lindemann and
Karl Kuschel each had one hit.
The Knights finished the season with a record of 8-26 overall and 4-12 in UMAC play after the two defeats. UNW improved its record to 22-16 on the season and 14-2 in league play with the two wins.Â
