NEW ULM, Minn. - The Martin Luther College women's basketball team was unable to overcome a halftime deficit in a 66-56 loss to Viterbo on Saturday.
The teams were tied 13-13 after the first period, but the V-Hawks took control of the game early in the second quarter with a 13-0 run on the way to building a 35-22 halftime lead.
Viterbo tried to put the game out of reach in the third quarter with another 10-0 run, but the Knights were able to cut the deficit back down to 11 points at 49-38 at the end of the period.
MLC cut the deficit into single digits early in the fourth quarter, but was unable to get closer than seven points the rest of the way.
The Knights struggled shooting from the outside, making 32.2 percent of their field goal attempts and 9.1 percent (1-11) from beyond the three-point arc.
Jade St. Germaine led MLC with 16 points and a pair of blocks.
Grace Schultz added 13 points and led the team in rebounds (eight) and assists (three).
Emily Witkowski and
Ruth Buchholz each scored seven points apiece off the bench.
With her 13 points, Schultz moved into third place in program history with 944 career points. Schultz entered the game two shy of Mariah Schoof's career total of 933 points.
The Knights fell to 1-2 on the season in defeat. Viterbo improved to 3-5 with the win.
MLC will return to action on Tuesday, November 21, when it hosts St. Olaf in a game scheduled to tip off at 7:30 p.m.
