DULUTH, Minn. - The Martin Luther College women's basketball team scored a big win at St. Scholastica on Saturday by the score of 70-59.
The two teams entered the game tied for fifth place in the conference standings, and the win gave the Knights the season sweep and tiebreaker advantage against the Saints as they head into the final two weekends of the regular season.
The teams went back and forth throughout the first quarter, but the Knights closed strong with a 19-17 lead heading into the second quarter and never trailed again in the game.
MLC built the lead to ten points at 54-44 with 6:54 to play in the fourth quarter, but the Saints rallied with a 9-0 run over the next three minutes to cut the Knights' lead to one before MLC was able to regroup and finish off the win.
Defense led the way for the Knights as they held the Saints to 29.2 percent shooting overall, including 4-26 shooting from beyond the three-point arc.
Offensively, MLC's top three scorers led the way.
Jade St. Germaine led all players with 19 points to go with 11 rebounds.
Mariah Schoof made four three-point field goals on the way to 18 points, while
Grace Schultz scored 14 points and grabbed 11 rebounds.
Schoof's four three-point goals give her 150 for her career. She is one of only three MLC players in program history to reach that milestone. Schoof also moved into third place in program history in career points, surpassing Alex Anthon. She now has 866 career points.Â
MLC improved to 8-13 on the season and 6-7 in UMAC play with the win. CSS fell to 7-14 overall and 5-8 in conference play in defeat.
The Knights will return to action on Friday, February 10, when they travel to Finlandia for a game scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m.
