WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - The Martin Luther College baseball team closed its season-opening Florida trip with a pair of losses to Emerson College by the scores of 5-0 and 2-1 on Monday.
Emerson 5, MLC 0
MLC was unable to scratch across a run to help starting pitcher
Jon Kock in a 5-0 defeat in game one.
Kock, the reigning UMAC Pitcher of the week, started the game on the mound and went 4.2 innings, allowing four runs on eight hits as he fell to 1-1 on the season.
Emerson scored once in the first first, and did most of its damage in the fifth when it chased Kock from the game with three runs in the inning.
Andrew Mantz and
Noah Panzer finished the game on the mound for the Knights.
Offensively, MLC was able to generate only four hits, with
Jason Lindemann,
Tom Keller,
Karl Kuschel and
Caleb Christopher each recording one.
Emerson 2, MLC 1
Emerson scored twice in the sixth inning to earn a 2-1 win in game two.
Matt Baehman pitched well for the second time on the trip, allowing just the two runs (one earned) on six hits while striking out four. He fell to 0-2 on the season, despite allowing only three runs in 13 innings of work on the trip.
The bats generated five hits, but weren't able to put enough of a rally together to give Baehman more support. Baehman drove in the team's lone run in the fifth inning on an RBI single that scored Kuschel. Kuschel was the top hitter for the Knights with two hits in the game.
The Knights closed the eight-game trip with a record of 3-5 following the two defeats. Emerson improved to 3-0 following the two wins.
MLC is scheduled to return to action on Tuesday, March 14, for a doubleheader at Gustavus Adolphus College. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
