ST. PETER, Minn. - The Martin Luther College baseball team lost both games of its doubleheader at Gustavus Adolphus College on Thursday by the scores of 8-1 and 9-1.
GAC 8, MLC 1
The Gusties scored at least one run in each of their final five times at bat on the way to an 8-1 win in game one.
MLC starting pitcher
Andrew Mantz (0-1) held GAC scoreless in the first inning, but allowed two runs in each of the next two innings as the Gusties built a 4-0 lead. For the game, Mantz allowed four runs (three earned) on six hits in three innings.
The Knights scored their only run in the fifth frame when
Dillon Solomon crossed home plate with the help of a GAC error off the bat of
Jon Kock. Solomon,
Jared Lindemann and
Caleb Christopher recorded the Knights' three hits in the game.
GAC 9, MLC 1
The Gusties finished the sweep with a 9-1 win in game two against a line-up of a number of young MLC players.
The Knights started a line-up that featured eight first-year players, including starting pitcher
Caleb Gustafson. Gustafson (0-1) was the victim of several defensive miscues, which led to three unearned runs among the six total runs he allowed in three innings. Christopher and
Grant Hagen finished the final three innings in relief.
Tyler Roecker led off the game with his first career hit, and then came around to score on an RBI single by
Adam Kock to give MLC its lone run.
Adam Westra,
Tyler Wahl and Christopher also recorded hits in the game for the Knights.
MLC fell to 4-14 on the season following the two defeats. GAC improved to 16-8 with the two wins.
The Knights will return to action on Saturday, April 15, when they host Northland College in a doubleheader scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
