NEW ULM, Minn. - The Martin Luther College volleyball team split its home UMAC triangular on Wednesday. The Knights lost 3-0 against Northwestern (25-15, 25-13, 25-15) but held off UW-Superior for a 3-2 win (25-15, 27-25, 18-25, 15-25, 15-6).
UNW 3, MLC 0
The Knights were unable to slow down the Eagles in a 3-0 sweep to open the day.
UNW entered the match ranked eighth in all of NCAA Division IIIÂ in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) top 25 poll and didn't disappoint, hitting .436 for the match while MLC hit .150.
Jade St. Germaine led MLC with eight kills, while
Moriah Hackbarth added seven kills and a pair of blocks.
Taylor Weber led MLC with 11 digs.
MLC 3, UWS 2
The Knights held off the hard-charging Yellowjackets to finish the day with a 3-2 win by the scores of 25-15, 27-25, 18-25, 15-25 and 15-6.
MLC opened the match on fire and took the first two sets, but UWS evened the match in the third and fourth set to force a fifth and deciding game.
In that final set,
Faith Otte served six straight points to give the Knights a 10-3 lead, and
Kira Grev closed the match with one of her four kills in the final set.
St. Germaine and Hackbarth once again led the attack with 18 and 10 kills, respectively. Weber set a new career high with 25 digs, while
Rylee Weisensel added eight blocks to go with five kills and three service aces.
Grace Schultz and Grev finished with nine and eight kills, respectively.
MLC moved to 11-8 on the season and 6-2 in UMAC play following the split, and has now finished the first half of conference play.
The Knights will return to action at home on Saturday, September 30, when they host St. Scholastica in a match scheduled to start at 3 p.m.
