STORM LAKE, Iowa - The Martin Luther College men's soccer team lost its season opener at Buena Vista 2-1 in double overtime Tuesday night.
The men started late following a 1-1 tie after a pair of overtimes by the women's soccer teams, and the men nearly followed suit in the night cap.
Joseph Graumann put the Knights on the board early with his first goal of the season in the ninth minute to give MLC the 1-0 lead.
The Beavers came back quickly thanks to a Noah Bardwell goal in the 12th minute to tie the score 1-1.
The two teams remained tied through one overtime until Bardwell scored the game-winner off a corner kick in the 102nd minute to give BVU the win.
Both teams finished with 16 total shots, and while the Knights were credited with only two shots on goal, Graumann (19th minute) and
Josh Koelpin (64th minute) each hit the crossbar on attempts that that would have given the Knights the lead.
Graumann led the Knights with four total shots, while Koelpin and
Ethan Schultz were each credited with three shots apiece.
Caleb King stopped six of the eight shots on he faced in goal for MLC.
The Knights fell to 0-1 to start the season in defeat, while BVU improved to 2-1 with the win.
MLC will return to action tomorrow (Wednesday, September 6) when it hosts Gustavus Adolphus in a game scheduled to start at 5 p.m.
