NEW ULM, Minn. - The Martin Luther College men's basketball team lost a heartbreaker on an overtime buzzer beater against UW-Superior on Saturday by the score of 76-73.
The Knights controlled the game through the first half and then built a lead as big as 11 early in the second half.Â
The Yellowjackets made a run to take the lead for the first time with 7:15 to play in regulation, and the two teams traded the lead back and forth until the final minute, when Colton Williams tied the game with a lay-up with seven seconds remaining.Â
After the Knights missed a chance at the buzzer to win in regulation,
Austin DeNoyer gave the Knights a 73-72 lead thanks to a three-pointer with 2:34 to play in the extra period.
The Yellowjackets tied the game with a free throw with 35 seconds to play, and then had one final possession to end to the game. MLC's
Ian Paulsen blocked a lay-up attempt with two seconds remaining, but the rebound bounced to UWS forward Vid Milenkovic, who was ruled to get his jumper from the wing off just before the buzzer to send the Yellowjackets home with the win.
MLC attempted 25 more field goals in the game, but UWS made up ground at the free throw line, outscoring MLC 21-2.Â
DeNoyer led all players with 24 points for MLC. Paulsen finished with 20 points to go with nine rebounds and three steals.
MLC fell to 2-17 on the season and 1-10 in UMAC play in defeat. UWS improved to 5-15 overall and 3-8 in league play with the win.
The Knights will return to action tomorrow (Sunday, January 28), when they host Finlandia for a non-conference game scheduled to tip off at 2 p.m.
