Josh Arndt Leads Knights to Win in Record-Breaking Day

MORRIS, Minn. - Martin Luther College senior wide receiver Josh Arndt put his name in the school's record books as the football team won 41-28 at Minnesota Morris on Saturday.

Arndt set a new MLC single-game record with 222 yards on only four receptions. Three of those receptions went for touchdowns, giving him 25 for his career to tie the school record for career touchdown receptions (held by Mark Jacobson). Arndt also became the third player in school history to record at least 2,000 career receiving yards.

Expectations coming into the day might have been for a defensive battle between the two programs, but offense ruled the first half as the Knights and Cougars traded touchdowns until MLC was finally able to score twice late in the second quarter to take a 34-21 lead into the half.

Arndt scored on receptions of 56 and 33 yards from Zach Bloomquist in the opening half, while Nate Stein, Austin DeNoyer and Elliott Butler ran in scores of their own.

Arndt finished the Knights' offensive outburst on the opening drive of the second-half with an 87-yard touchdown reception from Bloomquist, tying the school record for the longest pass play in program history.

The MLC defense stood tall the rest of the way, holding the Cougars to only one score early in the fourth quarter, and then shutting down several late UMM opportunities with interceptions by Ben Arndt and Jared Witkowiak.

The Knights finished the day with 586 total yards and had success on the ground and through the air. Bloomquist completed 13 of 19 passes for 308 yards and three scores, while Austin DeNoyer led the Knights with 102 yards and one score rushing. MLC finished the day with 270 rushing yards on 61 carries, with Butler (17 carries, 77 yards) and Stein (eight carries, 67 yards) also playing key roles.

Defensively, MLC continued its run of forcing turnovers and generating pressure on opposing quarterbacks. Ben Arndt recorded two interceptions on the day and moved into a tie for second place in the MLC single-season record books with six interceptions this season.

Up front, Dan Gensmer and Nathan Holz each recorded two sacks, with Gensmer also finishing the day with 4.5 tackles for loss and forcing one fumble. Ben Riegsecker and Joe Herrewig each recorded nine tackles to lead he team.

MLC improved to 7-1 this season and 6-0 in UMAC play thanks to their seventh consecutive win. UMM fell to 2-6 on the season and 2-4 in league play in defeat.

The Knights will return to action on Saturday, November 3, when they host MacMurray in a battle of unbeaten teams atop the UMAC standings.
