DULUTH, Minn. - The Martin Luther College men's soccer team saw its season come to an end with a 4-1 loss at St. Scholastica in the semifinal round of the UMAC Postseason Tournament on Wednesday.
The Knights entered the game as the tournament's number three seed and split with CSS in a pair of meetings during the regular season, but the Saints came out strong in the first half to set the tone for the rest of the game.
MLC keeper
Gabriel Plocher made several stellar stops early in the game, but the Saints were able to get on the board in the 17th minute when Darby Henderson scored off his own rebound to give CSS a 1-0 lead.
Jordan Finneran put the Saints up 2-0 with a rocket shot from a bad angle in the 29th minute, and Luke Buckton pushed the CSS lead to 3-0 in the 32nd minute.
Joe Graumann gave the Knights life late in the first half with his team-leading 12th goal of the season an assist from
Nathan Lemke, giving MLC momentum going into the half with the hopes of a comeback.
It was CSS that would score the next goal, however, as an MLC defender deflected a crossing attempt into the back of the goal in the 57th minute to give the Saints' the final 4-1 margin.
Graumann was the main offensive threat for MLC, recording six total shots and four of the team's five shots on goal.
Hugo Ugalde-Bemer and
Josh Koelpin were each credited with a pair of shots.
Plocher finished the day with 11 saves on 15 CSS shots on goal.
MLC fell to 8-9-2 to finish the season following the loss. CSS advanced to the championship game this weekend as it improved to 11-7-2 with the win.
