NEW ULM, Minn. - The Martin Luther College men's basketball team defeated Lakeland University 70-60 for its first win of the season on Monday.
All 16 available players on the Knights contributed in the game on both ends of court. 11 different players scored on the night, while all 16 players contributed to a defensive effort that held the Muskies to 32.4 percent shooting.
MLC led 32-29 at the half thanks to 6-10 shooting from beyond the three-point arc. First-year guard
Joseph Hirsch led the way with nine points off the bench while making both of his attempts from downtown.
Lakeland came back in the second half and led 54-52 with 5:35 to play, but MLC took control of the game with a 16-3 run over the next five minutes to build a double-digit lead on the way to the win.
Austin DeNoyer had a big night in his first action of the basketball season with 13 points off the bench. In total, the MLC bench scored 41 points, as both
Ian Paulsen and
Josh Tomlin added eight points apiece.
Nate Lindloff led the starters with eight points and a pair of three-point field goals.
MLC finished the game 10-18 from beyond the arc, while the Muskies struggled mightily from the outside, making just four of 27 attempts from deep.
The Knights improved to 1-1 on the season with the win. Lakeland fell to 1-1 in defeat.
MLC will return to action tomorrow (Tuesday, November 20), when it travels to Wisconsin Lutheran College for a game scheduled to tip off at 5:30 p.m.
