MORRIS, Minn. - The Martin Luther College baseball team dropped both games of its doubleheader at University of Minnesota Morris on Monday by the scores of 10-4 and 7-3.
UMM 10, MLC 4
The Knights were unable to keep within striking distance of the Cougars in the late innings of a 10-4 game-one loss.
MLC scored twice in the bottom of the first inning to take an early 2-0 lead, but left the bases loaded before it could do any more damage.
UMM responded with a pair of runs in the second inning to tie the game, and then scored at least one run in each of the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth frames to build a lead MLC was not able to come back against.
MLC starting pitcher
Dillon Solomon (1-3) went the distance for MLC in defeat, allowing 12 hits and 10 runs (nine earned). Solomon and
Matt Baehman led the MLC offense with three hits apiece.
UMM 7, MLC 3
The Cougars completed the sweep with a 7-3 win in game two.
MLC starting pitcher
Nate Goelzer (0-1) opened the game with four shutout innings, but the Knights were unable to take advantage on offense before the Cougars finally opened the scoring with three runs in the fifth inning. Goelzer took the loss after allowing three runs (all unearned) on four hits.Â
The Knights trailed 7-0 heading into the bottom of the eighth inning, but kept themselves in the game with three runs in that inning as
Tyler Roecker,
Jared Lindemann and
Caleb Christopher each drove in runs. That would be all the Knights could muster, however, as the Cougars shut the door in the ninth to secure the win.
Adam Kock led MLC with three hits in the game, while Christopher added a pair of hits.
MLC fell to 2-16 on the season and 0-10 in UMAC play with the two defeats. UMM improved to 8-20 overall and 7-5 in league play with the two wins.
The Knights will return to action tomorrow (Tuesday, May 1) when they travel to Watertown, Minn., for a doubleheader against Crown College. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
