Knights Dominant in 63-28 Win at Greenville

GREENVILLE, Ill. - The Martin Luther College football team dominated in all facets on the way a 63-28 win at Greenville College on Saturday.

The Knights set a new program record with 711 total yards of offense, breaking the previous mark of 655 yards set against Crown on October 17, 2009. MLC also broke the school record with 405 yards passing, topping the previous mark of 399 against Maranatha Baptist on September 7, 2013.

The game was tied 14-14 early in the second quarter following a Greenville kick return touchdown, but the Knights responded by running off 49 unanswered points to take a 63-14 lead early in the fourth quarter to put the game to bed.

MLC answered a Greenville touchdown to open the game with an 84-yard Josh Arndt touchdown reception, and then added four scores in the second quarter. Zach Bloomquist ran for two of those scores and added a 45-yard touchdown strike to Mike Radue, while Austin DeNoyer accounted for the other score with a run from 24-yards out to help the Knights to a 35-14 halftime lead.

The Knights didn't let up in the second half, as Bloomquist added his third rushing score of the day to open the third quarter, while Elliott Butler, Jacob Borgwardt and James Chernohorsky also added rushing scores to give MLC the insurmountable lead.

Not to be overlooked, the defense was also dominant as it held the Greenville offense scoreless for three quarters and forced three turnovers following the Panthers' touchdown on the game's first possession. The Knights held the Panthers under 200 yards of total offense until the final quarter, as Nathan Holz and Joe Herrewig led the team with seven tackles apiece. Herrewig, Ben Arndt and Jared Ruffin each intercepted one pass in the game, while Dan Gensmer and Jake Kieselhorst each recorded a pair of tackles for loss and one sack apiece.

Bloomquist had a big day for the Knights under center, completing 18 of 22 passes for 289 yards and two touchdowns to go with 79 rushing yards and three rushing scores. First-year back-up Ethan Aguilar also got into the act in the second half, completing six of nine pass attempts for 81 yards.

DeNoyer stuffed the stat sheet, as well, rushing 12 times for 67 yards and one score, while also catching five passes for 47 yards and completing his only pass attempt for 35 yards. Josh Arndt caught four passes for 133 yards and one score to lead the receivers.

MLC improved to 2-1 on the season and 1-0 in UMAC play with the win. Greenville fell to 0-4 overall and 0-2 in conference play in defeat.

The Knights will return to action on Saturday, September 29, when they host St. Scholastica in a game scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
