Knights Roll in Sweep of NCU in Home Opener

NEW ULM, Minn. - The Martin Luther College softball team rolled to a doubleheader sweep of North Central University in the first home games of the season Wednesday by the scores of 19-1 and 13-1.

MLC 19, NCU 1 (5 innings)

The Knights scored eight runs in the second inning and 10 more in the third on the way to a 19-1 win in game one.

MLC pounded 21 hits in only four innings, including six doubles, two triples and two home runs. Elena Hoffman accounted for both home runs in the game, giving her a team-best four this season, and drove in a total of five runs on the day.

Brittany Denn and Halley Engelbrecht added three hits apiece, with Engelbrecht also driving in four runs to go with three runs scored. Kayla Rosenbaum finished with three RBI and two runs scored.

Morgan Palubicki (1-8) earned her first win of the season after allowing one run on five hits while striking out five Rams.

MLC 13, NCU 1 (5 innings)

MLC continued its offensive onslaught in game two on the way to a 13-1 win in five innings.

Audrey Timm opened the game with an inside the park home run to right field, and left fielder Jodi Halvorson added an inside the park home run of her own later in the game.

In total, the Knights smashed 16 more hits, led by three apiece from Timm, Denn and Brett Burger. Timm finished with three runs batted in, while Hoffman, Burger and Halvorson each drove in two runs.

That was more than enough offense for Rebecca Pruss (5-2), who allowed only one run on three hits in four innings to earn the win.

MLC improved to 6-10 overall and 2-2 in UMAC play with the sweep. NCU fell to 2-18 on the season and 0-2 in league play.

The Knights will return to action on Tuesday, April 9, when they travel to Minnesota Morris for a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
