NEW ULM, Minn. - The Martin Luther College men's basketball team held off Concordia-Moorhead in the final minute for a 73-72 win in non-conference action on Monday.
After a slow start, the Knights built an 11-point lead with 8:00 to play in the first half thanks to strong play on both ends of the court. The Cobbers fought their way back into the game, but
Micah Kieselhorst's two three-point field goals in the final 80 seconds of the first half sent the Knights into halftime with a 38-34 advantage.Â
Concordia started to take control early in the second half and built a 52-48 lead wth 13:42 to play in the game, but the Knights would battle back with the help of 10 points from
Jack Heichelbech in the second half, and built its lead back to five (67-62) heading into the final minute.Â
The Cobbers made several baskets to keep the pressure on MLC in the final possessions, but senior
Josh Tomlin made all six of his attempts from the free throw line to help the Knights secure the win and snap a five-game losing streak.
MLC finished the game shooting 39.1 percent from the field and 5-16 from beyond the three-point arc while holding the Cobbers to 6-20 from three-point range. The Knights also outscored them 18-10 at the free throw line.
Heichelbech and
Austin DeNoyer led MLC with 14 points apiece, while
Ian Paulsen added 11 points to go with six assists and four blocks.
Ethan Eisenmann came up big on the defensive end with two blocks and two steals to go with eight points and nine rebounds.
MLC improved to 3-10 on the season with the win. Concordia-Moorhead fell to 2-11 in defeat.
The Knights will return to action on Wednesday, January 15, when they travel to Crown College for a game scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m.
