Women Fall 2-1 to LumberJills

NEW ULM, Minn. - The Martin Luther College women's soccer team suffered a frustrating 2-1 defeat to Northland College on Saturday.

The Knights doubled the LumberJills (18-9) in total shots, and also held an 8-5 advantage in shots on goal for the game, but could not find the results to show for it.

Northland took an early 1-0 lead off a goal on a free kick in the 16th minute, and then added to it in the 61st minute when the Knights committed an own goal to push the LumberJills' lead to 2-0.

Between those goals, Lilianne Zimpelmann ripped a free kick off the cross bar in the 41st minute for the Knights, and Megan Marohn's attempt from inside the box just 21 seconds into the second half hit off the right post.

The Knights finally broke through in the closing seconds with a goal by Morgan Spoehr (her third of the season), but with only two seconds left on the clock the Knights could not come back any further.

Hannah Schroeder led MLC with four total shots (one on goal). Zimpelmann and Nicole Porter each recorded a pair of shots on goal.

MLC dropped to 3-10-1 on the season and 2-7-1 in league play in defeat. Northland improved to 3-8-2 overall and 2-6-1 in the UMAC with the win.

The Knights will return to action on Friday, October 22, when they host Minnesota Morris in a game scheduled to kick off at 1:00 p.m.
