NEW ULM, Minn. - The Martin Luther College football team scored in the final seconds to defeat University of Northwestern-St. Paul (UNW) 27-21 in Saturday's season finale.
The Knights recognized 18 seniors playing their final collegiate game prior to the opening kickoff, and many of those seniors made critical plays down the stretch to make sure they went out with a win.
The Knights scored on their first drive of the game, and then tied the game 14-14 heading into halftime on a 13-yard touchdown pass from
Ethan Aguilar to
Mike Radue with 16 seconds left in the second quarter.
The Eagles answered with a 12-play, 63-yard drive to start the third quarter, and held onto that lead heading into the four period as snow began to fall harder and harder.
Trailing 21-14,
Joshuah Kren tied the game 21-21 with a his second three-yard rushing touchdown of the game with 10:43 to play.
After two straight stops by the MLC defense, the Knights went on a 13-play, 89-yard drive that featured a 34-yard strike down the sidelines from Aguilar to Kren, followed by on a spectacular one-handed grab by Radue to set MLC up at the UNW 13 yard-line.
After three
Carson Oestreich runs, Kren scored his third rushing touchdown of the game, this time from the two-yard line, with only nine seconds left to give the Knights the lead and the win.
Aguilar, who missed much of the season due to injury, finished 15-23 through the air for 184 yards and one score in his final collegiate game. Kren caught five passes for 66 yards, while
Mason Cox made four critical catches for 69 yards.
The Knights also got things done on the ground, as Oestreich and Kren ran behind five-year starting seniors
Andrew Owczarzak,
Carrington Cunningham and
Derek Gulrud for 128 and 94 yards, respectively. MLC finished the day with 256 yards on 57 carries.
Oestreich also made history for the Knights, becoming the fifth player in program history to rush for at least 1,000 yards in a season.
Defensively, the Knights allowed a pair of big plays for touchdowns in the first half, but rallied to hold the Eagles scoreless on their final four drives of the game.
Jon Holtz led the defense with nine tackles and one interception.
Noah Nordlie added five tackles, including 3.0 tackles for loss and one sack. Seniors
Jacob Lewis and
Simeon Glende also combined for a sack.
The Knights closed the season 5-4 overall and 5-1 in league play with the win. UNW fell to 2-7 overall and 2-3 in league play in defeat.
