NEW ULM, Minn. - The Martin Luther College men's basketball team lost a 99-95 double-overtime thriller to Minnesota Morris in Monday's regular season finale.
The Knights held a 46-38 halftime lead after a strong first half, but the Cougars rallied to quickly tie the game early in the second half.
The two teams went back and forth from there, trading the lead 16 total times in the game to go with eight ties. In the final seconds of both regulation and the first overtime, MLC had the ball in the final seconds with chances to end the game, but their opportunities rimmed out to give UMM a chance.
In the second overtime period, the Cougars pushed their lead to four (96-92) with 32 seconds to play, and then held off the Knights' late attempts at a rally over the final seconds to secure the win.
The Cougars attacked off the dribble relentlessly throughout the game, helping them out-score MLC 60-38 in the paint and 25-13 at the free throw line.
The Knights had early success from outside, shooting 7-18 from three-point range in the first half, but finished the game 10-33 from distance.
Five MLC players finished the game in double figures, led by 18 points from
Jonathan Riebe. Riebe also added a team-high three steals.
Joseph Hirsch and
Jacob Price each scored 17 points for the Knights, with Price also leading the team with eight rebounds.
Jack Heichelbech and
Caleb Westra scored 14 and 10 points, respectively.
The Knights finished the regular season with a record of 2-10 following the non-conference defeat. UMM improved to 4-5 with the win.
MLC will return to action on Thursday, March 4, when it plays in the opening round of the UMAC Postseason Tournament.Â
