MORRIS, Minn. - The Martin Luther College men's soccer team went the distance at University of Minnesota Morris (UMM) and finished with a 1-1 tie following two overtimes on Tuesday.
After a scoreless first half, MLC finally broke free with the game's first goal on a header by
Clay Hirsch in the 68th minute.
Isaias Santos and
David Martin assisted on the goal for the Knights.
The Knights held the lead for over ten minutes, but the Cougars responded in the 79th minute with an equalizer from Devon Thompson.
MLC had a good scoring in the final minutes of regulation, but UMM keeper Jake Peterson made a sliding stop on Hirsch to send the game into overtime.
The two teams went back and forth, but neither defense conceded much in the two extra periods before the game ended tied 1-1.
The Knights finished the game ahead in shots (17-12), shots on goal (7-5) and corners (8-3), and
Josiah Wordell led all players with six total shots and three shots on goal.
Joshua Higgins was strong in goal for MLC, stopping four of the five shots he faced.
MLC moved to 0-2-1 overall and in UMAC play following the tie. UMM is now 1-1-1 on the season and in league play.
The Knights will return to action on Thursday, April 15, when they host Bethany Lutheran in a game scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m.
