Softball Drops Two in Home Opening DH

NEW ULM, Minn - The Martin Luther College softball team lost both games of its first home doubleheader of the season to UW-Superior (UWS) by the scores of 4-2 and 16-7 on Wednesday.

UWS 4, MLC 2

The Yellowjackets scored three times in the first inning and held off the Knights late to win game one 4-2.

UWS jumped in front with three runs in the first inning and one more in the second, but MLC starting pitcher Brett Burger settled in from that point to give the Knights' offense a chance.

The bats got going with a pair of runs in the fifth inning with the help of a Samantha Schoch RBI-single, but MLC stranded two runners in the sixth and then went down in order in the seventh inning.

Burger (1-5) threw a complete game, allowing four runs (one earned) on six hits in seven innings. After UWS recorded four hits in the first two innings, Burger held them to just two more hits over the final five frames.

Schoch led the Knights with two hits.

UWS 16, MLC 7

The Knights could not slow down the UWS bats in a 16-7 loss in game two.

MLC started fast with four runs in the first inning, but UWS scored at least one run in each of the next five frames, including three in the second inning, six in the third, and four more in the sixth. The Yellowjackets outhit the Knights 17-10 for the game, and also took advantage of four MLC errors on defense.

Elena Hoffman and Burger each drove in runs in the four-run first, and then Hannah Rassat added a pair of RBIs in the sixth to score Hannah Damke and Amanda Kant.

Megan Pung (0-4) took the loss on the mound for MLC after allowing nine runs (seven earned) on nine hits in three innings.

The Knights fell to 1-9 on the season following the two defeates. UWS improved to 10-6 with the two wins.

MLC will return to action on Friday, April 16, when it hosts Crown College in a doubleheader scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m.
