Softball Wins in Walk-Off to Close Sweep of Northland

NEW ULM, Minn. - The Martin Luther College softball team capped its doubleheader sweep of Northland College with a walk-off win in extra innings on Saturday. The Knights defeated the LumberJills 5-3 in game one, and then took gave two 7-6 in eight innings.

MLC 5, Northland 3

MLC took control of game one in the middle innings and never looked back in a 5-3 win over the LumberJills.

The game remained scoreless through three innings, but the Knights broke the tie with three runs in the fourth thanks to an RBI-groundout by Elena Hoffman and a two-run single by Brett Burger.

Northland came back with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning, but MLC answered with two more runs in the bottom half thanks to an RBI-single by Lisa Hoffer, followed by a sacrifice fly by Kylie Wolf that scored Jordyn Heckendorf all the way from second base.

That would be more than enough for Burger (3-5), who went the distance on the rubber and allowed only one earned run on seven hits to earn the win.

Hoffer led MLC hitters with two hits.

MLC 7, Northland 6 (eight innings)

The Knights overcame a two-run deficit to force extra innings, and then won game two 7-6 thanks to a walk-off double by Emmalee Mindock that scored Lexi Fischer.

The game went back and forth early, as the LumberJills answered a four-run MLC third inning with a four-run fourth inning of their own to take a 6-4 lead.

MLC came back, however, thanks to a Hoffman sacrifice fly in the fifth, and then tied the game 6-6 on a Heckendorf bunt single in the sixth.

In the eighth inning, Mindock made her first career collegiate hit count as she hit a double off the wall in left field, allowing Fischer to score from first base to give the Knights the win.

Burger (4-5) came up big on the mound again for MLC, allowing only one hit and zero runs in four innings of relief to earn the win. Burger not only helped herself at the plate with a pair of hits, but also made use of her glove as she recorded six assists or putouts on 12 of her recorded outs on the rubber.

Halley Engelbrecht joined Burger with a team-best two hits, and also added two RBI.

MLC improved to 5-9 on the season and 5-3 in UMAC play with the sweep. Northland fell to 12-12 overall and 6-2 in league play following the two defeats.

The Knights are scheduled to return to action on Monday, April 19, when they host Minnesota Morris in a doubleheader scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
