Hoffer Finishes UMM Sweep with Walk-Off Three-Run HR

NEW ULM, Minn. - The Martin Luther College softball team pushed its winning streak to six with a doubleheader sweep of University of Minnesota Morris (UMM) by the scores of 4-3 and 8-6 in non-conference action on Monday.

MLC 4, UMM 3

MLC continued its recent strong play with a 4-3 win over the Cougars in game one.

The Knights did their damage at the plate in two innings as they scored twice in the second thanks to a pair of hits and an error, and then scored two more runs in the fourth inning following RBI-base hits by Emma Berg and Jordyn Heckendorf.

The four runs of offense would be enough for starting pitcher Brett Burger (5-5), who went the distance for the eighth time this season and allowed three runs on nine hits while striking out three to get the win.

Seven different MLC players finished with one hit, while four different players scored runs for the Knights.

MLC 8, UMM 6 (8 innings)

Lisa Hoffer hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to give the Knights their second walk-off win in the last three days by the score of 8-6 in game two.

The Knights built a two-run lead early thanks to an RBI-single by Elena Hoffman in the third inning, but the Cougars came right back to tie the score with a pair of runs in the fourth.

MLC took another lead with a three-run fifth inning following another Hoffman RBI-single and a UMM error, but once again UMM came right back to the game at 5-5 in the top of the sixth inning.

After the Cougars scored once in the top of the eighth inning, MLC put two runners on base with no outs for Hoffer, who slammed her pitch over the right center field fence for her second home run of the season to end the game. Hoffer finished the day with two hits, two runs scored, and three runs batted in.

Burger (6-5) entered in relief in the fourth inning and earned the win, allowing four runs (two earned) on four hits in 4.2 innings. Burger was named UMAC Player of the Week earlier in the day, and has now recorded wins in five of the Knights' six games during their winning streak. Burger also led the Knights at the plate with three hits.

Kylie Wolf, Hoffman and Halley Engelbrecht each joined Hoffer with two hits in the game.

MLC improved to 7-9 on the season with the sweep, while UMM fell to 8-16 with the two losses.

The Knights will return to UMAC play on Wednesday, April 21, when they host North Central for a doubleheader scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m.
