ST. PAUL - The Martin Luther College baseball team lost both games of its doubleheader at University of Northwestern-St. Paul (UNW) by the scores of 8-4 and 24-4 on Thursday.
UNW 8, MLC 4
The Knights battled and scored a season-high four runs, but could not hold down the UNW offense in an 8-4 defeat in game one.
The Eagles built an early 4-0 lead, but MLC came back to cut the deficit in half on a
Mason Cox triple in the fifth inning.
After UNW pushed its lead to 7-2, the Knights once again responded for two in the seventh thanks to RBI-doubles from
Caleb Lindholm and Cox, but that was all the offense they could muster as the Eagles tacked on one more insurance run in the bottom half of the seventh and held on for the win.
Jackson Lindemann (0-3) went the distance on the mound in defeat, allowing eight runs (seven earned) on 13 hits while striking out four in 8.0 innings.
Cox and Lindholm each finished with a pair of hits and one run scored, while
Branden Mueller reached base twice and scored two runs.
UNW 24, MLC 4 (7 inn.)
MLC scored three times in the first inning, but the Eagles exploded for 24 runs the rest of the way to take game two 24-4.
Lindholm and Cox led off the game with two straight hits, and Lindholm scored the first run on a wild pitch. Later in the inning, Mueller scored Cox and
Tony Sahatjian on a two-run double to push the Knights' lead to 3-0 after one-half inning.
It was all UNW from there, as the Eagles scored three times in the bottom half of the first, and then put the game away with a 12-run second frame. They also scored at least once in each of the next four innings.Â
Reagan Moore (0-1) took the loss after one inning of work. Lindholm and Mueller each finished with two hits apiece.Â
The Knights fell to 0-11 on the season and 0-6 in UMAC play following the two defeats. UNW improved to 19-8 overall and 7-1 in league play with the sweep.
MLC will return to action on Saturday, April 24, when it hosts Northland College for a doubleheader scheduled to start at 1:30 p.m.
