NEW ULM, Minn. - The Martin Luther College men's soccer team closed its regular season on a high note with a 5-2 win over North Central University (NCU) on Saturday.
The Knights were in control from the start, as
Mark Burger opened the scoring in the 11th minute with his second goal of the season, and
Lucas Martin followed with goals in the 25th and 35th minutes to give MLC a 3-0 lead going into halftime.
Xander Heiman assisted on both of Martin's goals, while
Daniel Buth added a helper on the Martin's second goal of the half.
The Rams got on the board in the 49th minute to cut the MLC lead to two, but the Knights answered with goals from
Evan Turriff and
Isaias Santos just 30 seconds apart to give them all the cushion they would need.
Martin assisted on Turriff's goal (the first of Turriff's collegiate career), while
Caleb Hengst had the helped on Santos' goal.
Martin's two goals pushed his season total to four, but Santos grabbed his team lead back with his fifth of the season in the second half. The two players combined for 11 shots and eight shots on goal in the win.
The Knights finished the game with a 31-13 advantage in total shots, including a 16-8 edge in shots on goal.
MLC improved to 3-3-2 on the season and in UMAC play with the win. NCU fell to 1-5 overall and in league play in defeat.
The Knights will return to action on Wednesday, May 5, for the opening round of the UMAC Postseason Tournament.
