UWS Tops Knights Twice in Home Finale

NEW ULM, Minn. - The Martin Luther College softball team lost both games to UW-Superior (UWS) in the final home games of the season on Saturday by the scores of 3-0 and 10-4.

UWS 3, MLC 0

The Yellowjackets held the Knights to two hits and did all their damage on offense late to win a low-scoring game one 3-0.

Brett Burger and UWS starting pitcher Tayler Kraemer matched each other with five straight scoreless innings to open the game, but the Yellowjackets took advantage of several MLC defensive miscues to score three times in the sixth inning.

That was more than enough for Kraemer, who held the Knights to only two hits and allowed only one base runner to reach scoring position.

Burger (7-7) allowed only five hits and three runs (zero earned) while striking out one in a complete game effort.

UWS 10, MLC 0

UWS started strong and held on the rest of the way to take game two 10-4.

The Yellowjackets scored three times in the first inning and added four more runs in the second to take a 7-0 lead. After UWS added another run in the fifth inning, MLC responded with four of its own Jordyn Heckendorf, Lisa Hoffer and Samantha Schoch hits back-to-back-to-back doubles to start the rally, and Elena Hoffman and Burger added RBI-hits later in the inning.

That would be all the Knights could muster offensively, however, as UWS answered with two more runs in the sixth inning and held on for the win.

Megan Pung (2-6) started the game for the Knights and allowed four runs on five hits in one inning.

Hoffman and Hoffer each finished with three hits, while Heckendorf added two hits and one run scored.

MLC fell to 9-13 overall and 7-7 in UMAC play after the two losses. UWS improved to 16-12 on the season and 9-7 in league play with the sweep.

The Knights will return to action on Monday, May 3, when they travel to Bethany Lutheran for a critical doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
