The MLC Knights notched their first win with a 34-0 drubbing of Finlandia on Saturday. A 27-point third quarter would lift the Knights over the Lions after a slow first half.
Both teams started slowly and exchanged possessions until the Knights took over on downs after stopping a brief Lions drive at their own 32. The Knights would march into the opponent's end zone after a nne play drive.
Rees Roecker and
Zach Arndt let the way with the running game. Roecker finished off the drive with a one-yard plunge.
Matthew Evink's extra point was good to put the Knights up 7-0.
The teams once again exchanged short drives, but MLC mounted a drive at the end of the quarter only to fall one-yard short as time ran out in the half.
MLC received the ball in the second half and took advantage of the opportunity. On the second play from scrimmage,
Rees Roecker darted 44 yards to take the ball deep into Lions territory.
Eli Slangor took the Knights to the one-yard line after runs of 11 and 14 yards. Roecker would finish the drive on another one-yard plunge. Evinks again made the extra point as the Knights pushed their lead to 14-0.
On the next drive, the Knights forced a fumble which was recovered by Zach Gregorius at the Finlandia 46. On their second play, QB
Max Nordlie connected with
Mason Cox for a 36-yard pass play to the Lions two-yard line.
Zach Arndt would punch it in a few plays later to give the Knights a 20-0 lead. After another defensive stop, the Knights launched another scoring drive, highlighted by
Max Nordlie's 32-yard run to the one. Slangor scored the touchdown on a dive. Evink converted again to give the Knights a 27-0 lead.
After another defensive stand, the Knights got the ball in a great field position after
Elijah Henning's 21--yard punt return to set up the Knights at the Finlandia 32. The Knights would score five plays later on
Eli Slangor's 14-yd TD run. Evink converted again to give the Knights a 34-0 lead. The Knights would threaten once more in the fourth quarter but lost a fumble at the Finlandia 16. The Knights defense continued to stifle the Lions attack and the game ended as the Knights ran out the clock.
Coach Huebner was particularly impressed by the defensive effort as well as his makeshift offensive line. He said both played well. He also cited the role of backups who came in a played very well. With
Carson Oestreich out, the running back trio of Roecker, Arndt, and Slangor filled in nicely. Roecker had 171 yards rushing, Arndt had 109, and Slangor added 71 yards. The Knights amassed 433 yards rushing. The Knights dominated time of possession 40 minutes to 19.
The stout Knight defense held Finlandia to 80 yards of total offense. They kept setting up the offense in good position. The Knights had six tackles for loss, including two sacks, a fumble recovery, and interception, and 8 pass breakups. Leading the Knights were inside linebacker

Joey Ehlke had 5 tackles and an interception.
