MLC Women Come Back to Defeat UW-Superior

NEW ULM, Minn. - The Martin Luther College women's basketball team overcame a 14-point halftime deficit to score its first ever win over UW-Superior (UWS) by the score of 69-67 on Friday.

The Yellowjackets built a 41-27 lead at the half, but the Knights were able to change the game in the second half with a zone defense that frustrated UWS.

While the Yellowjackets struggled to shoot just 4-17 in the third quarter, the Knights outscored them 22-11 to cut the deficit to only three (52-49) heading into the final period with the help of a three-point buzzer-beater by Ally Platzer at the end of the quarter.

In the final quarter, the Knights tied the game 53-53 on a pair of Kortney Behnke free throws with 7:56 to play, and finally took the lead on a Behnke layup on the following possession.

After the Yellowjackets came back to tie the game in the final minute, Anna Treder made two free throws with eight seconds to give MLC the lead, and the Knights then held UWS off on their final possession to secure the win.

MLC outscored UWS 42-26 in the second half, holding the Yellowjackets to 25.8 percent from the field, 28.6 percent from beyond the three-point arc, and forcing 10 turnovers.

On offense, MLC shot 41.7 percent from the field in the second half and made eight of 19 attempts from downtown for the game. The Knights also came through at the free throw line, where they shot 23-28 for the game.

Emma Nelson led the way for MLC with 12 points. Treder added 11 points and a team-high 10 rebounds, while Behnke also finished with 11 points.

The Knights improved to 7-13 on the season and 3-6 in UMAC play with the win. UWS fell to 5-13 overall and 4-5 in league play in defeat.

MLC will return to action tomorrow (Saturday, February 4) when it hosts Northland College in a game scheduled to tip off at 3:00 p.m.
