MANKATO, Minn. - The Martin Luther College softball team battled the elements on a Friday in which it lost 14-0 to Bethany Lutheran College (BLC) and 9-5 to UW-Superior (UWS) at the second UMAC crossover weekend hosted by BLC.
BLC 14, MLC 0
BLC was in control from start to finish of a 14-0 win in the opening game.
The Vikings scored at least once in each of their four times at bat, including five-run innings in the second and fourth frames off MLC starting pitcher
Madison Uhlenbrauck (4-12), who took the loss in the circle.
The Knights' offense was also held down in their times at bat as
Elena Hoffman and
Emmalee Mindock produced the team's two hits.
UWS 9, MLC 5
The Knights started strong, but fell 9-5 to UWS in a game that featured a rain delay that lasted more than two hours in the nightcap.
MLC jumped in front early with three runs in the first inning thanks a Hoffman singled and
Lexi Fischer two-run double, but the Yellowjackets answered with five runs in the bottom half before the weather forced a long delay.
After the game restarted, UWS was able to add to its lead with one run in the fifth inning, and then three more in the sixth. The Knights rallied with two runs in the seventh, but could not continue the comeback before UWS got the final outs.
Lisa Hoffer led MLC with a pair of hits, while
Jordyn Heckendorf scored two runs.
Jessica Horn (4-11) went the distance in the circle in defeat, allowing nine runs (six earned) on eight hits.
MLC fell to 10-24 overall and 5-15 in UMAC play following the two defeats. The Knights are hopeful to finish the regular season at the crossover event tomorrow (Saturday, April 30), with a game against Northland College if weather and field conditions allow it.
